Musical Migrations:
Crossroads of European Musical Diversity

The present scholarly monograph embraces, beneath its extremely hetero-
geneous thematic appearance, the endlessly absorbing phenomenon of mu-
sical migrations in Europe. Research into the latter always sheds light on
wider musical and cultural contacts that represent not only migrations in-
volving musicians but also the paths travelled by the musical repertoire and
musical ideas, styles and forms – to mention but a few. The monograph
therefore focuses on a wide range of questions about the causes of musical
migrations and their role and importance for musical culture. Particular
emphasis is placed on migrations in central Europe, which have also left a
decisive mark on musical culture in Slovenia. We need only remember the
veritable exodus of Bohemian musicians in the nineteenth century and the
significant contribution they made to the establishment and functioning of
the most important Slovene musical institutions of that time.
It should also be pointed out that the monograph also contains some
of the most recent findings of international research projects on the topic
of migrations in music. One of these is the HERA (Humanities in the Eu-
ropean Research Area) project Music Migrations in the Early Modern Age,
in which a number of Slovene musicologists have also been involved. In the
present monograph, the latter inform us about the latest findings in the fi-
eld of musical migrations in the Slovene lands in the seventeenth and eigh-
teenth centuries.
These migrations – as defined by a range of “push and pull” theories of
causality, in other words various factors, both positive and negative, of re-
