It is difficult if not impossible, in such a short presentation, to cover in
full the contacts, cooperation and influences between the Czech and Slo-
venian, which began at the end of the 18th century and continued in the
19th century.

It is essential to differentiate among various specific contacts, coopera-
tion, models and impacts, such as for example, Josef Dobrovsky’s influence
on the studies of Slovene language, the general cultural influence of Jan
Lego, the political influence of František Palacký, Karel Kramář and V­ áclav
Klofáč, the influence of the ideas of Tomáš G. Masaryk, František Drtina
and Lubor Niederle, and last but not least, the indirect and various impacts
of Czech grammar school teachers in the then Slovene country. One could
mention men of letters, musicians, architects, fine artists, natural scientists,
etc., who contributed significantly to the development and advancement of
Slovene culture, to its ideological and political diversity and extent.

The Czech-Slovene cultural, scholarly, including sciences, contacts
and cooperation was particularly important during the period of national
rebirth. Later, in the revolutionary year of 1848, political motivations pre-
vailed not only for Slovene-Czech cooperation but also for the general co-
operation among Slavic peoples. The participation of Slovenes at the Slavic
Congress in June 1848 in Prague, their support of Palacký’s vision of reforms
in the Habsburg Monarchy, their acceptance of the idea of Austro-Slavism
and Slav reciprocity, the boycotting of elections to the Frankfurt Parlia-
