research interests and pedagogic preoccupation. Above all, it is a live-
ly research laboratory, in which we can understand the analytical con-
struction of social conditions for field research in the media and commu-
nication in Slovenia.

In the first study, we are acquainted with the aspects of television in-
stitutionalization, appropriation and transformation of skiing into the flag-
ship national sport in Slovenia. The second study follows the presupposi-
tion how mobile telephony structures the everyday life of Slovenian users,
whose use of the mobile phone must be understood through the optics of
consumer ideologies and utopian dreams that produce technologized mo-
bile identities and new forms of communication. In the third study, we get
insights into how the Slovenian transitional ruling class, or the so-called
transitional elite, as the rising new social force of post-socialist parvenus,
the selected ones and the rich and prominent “discovered” a fashionable
refuge, where they can, with the use of the media, enforce the visualized or-
der of transitional social differentiation. The fourth study moves on to dis-
cuss the neighbouring members of the Slovenian national minority in Italy
and to their actor’s identification, imagining and commenting on some
of the aspects of their relationship with the media, as well as their under-
standing of how the media perceives them. In the fifth, we get acquainted
with the complex habitus of the regional newspaper Primorske novice and
its readership, where, on the basis of ethnographic perspective, the prob-
lem of the unambiguous and complex socially constructed relationships
between newspapers and readers is being revealed. The final sixth study en-
ables us to really experience the world of Slovenian YouTubers and to know
the auto-representative, participatory, promotional, monetization and oth-
er aspects of their life on the YouTube platform.

The basic conceptual binder of the studies is the complementary in-
tegration between two fundamental areas of academic commentary, an-
thropology and media studies, which are mainly determined by the eth-
nographic field research. The main contribution this work offers to science,
scholarship and to a better understanding of the media phenomena in
Slovenia is that theory and ethnography in their concrete integrating re-
alisations, manifestations and representations produce an insightful inter-
pretation of selected thematizations. With Media Ethnographies, it is easier
to understand many of the production, distribution, communication, in-
formation, consumption and socialization aspects of our collective and in-
dividually characterised media practices. Proving this thesis by adopting
