Introduction: Parents play a crucial role in well-being of their children. Previ-
ous studies have indicated that authoritative parenting is especially conducive
to healthy offspring development. In addition, parenting styles may also play a
protective role in the negative impact of various children's stressors. One such
stressor is the experience of not being treated fairly/equally in one’s social en-
vironment, i.e., being discriminated against. The purpose of our study was to
examine 1) whether authoritative parenting style impacts youth’s subjective
health and substance use; 2) whether perceived discrimination (PD) impacts
subjective health and substance use; and 3) whether authoritative parenting
moderates the impact of PD on health and substance use.
Methods: We examined survey data from a representative sample of Slovenian
young people aged 16–27 in 2013 (Flere et al., 2014; N = 907; 48.3 % women).
Results: Authoritative parenting was associated with better health and less fre-
quent substance use. In addition, PD had a significant negative impact on health,
but not on substance use. Finally, authoritative parenting styles moderated the
impact of PD on health by dampening the negative impact of PD on health.
Conclusion: Authoritative parenting is an important protective resource with-
in the family that improves health of young people and reduces the impact of
stressors on health.
