ARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY
The Department of Geography was one of the first two departments established at
the Faculty of Humanities and started delivering classes in 2001. The Department of
Geography thus laid the foundations for the development of the Faculty even before
the inauguration of the University of Primorska in 2003. In the period between Feb-
ruary 2001 and October 2009, the Department set up the undergraduate and post-
graduate study programme Geography of Contact Areas, a popular study course,
successfully completed by 136 graduates, while another 4 students were awarded a
master’s degree and 20 students were conferred a PhD in Geography of Contact
Areas. In the academic year 2007/08, a three-year university study programme Ge-
ography was implemented at the undergraduate level, following the principles of
the Bologna Declaration. Furthermore, in the academic year 2012/13 the univer-
sity double-major programme Geography was accredited. By the end of the aca-
demic year 2018/19, both programmes had been successfully completed by 99 grad-
uates. The 2nd cycle study programme Geography has been taught since 2010/11,
and in 2012/13 the 2nd cycle double-major study programme in pedagogy of Geog-
raphy-History was set up, preparing students for teaching in primary and secondary
schools. So far, 25 graduates have completed these master’s studies. Another 3 doc-
toral students have been awarded a doctorate of science in Geography.
At present, Assist. Prof. Dr. Valentina Brečko Grubar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gregor
Kovačič, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Miha Koderman, Assist. Prof. Dr. Mojca Poklar and the
assistant Branka Razpet form the core teaching staff at the Department. A num-
ber of other lecturers have also been involved in the execution of the programme,
namely, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Stanko Pelc, Assist. Prof. Dr. Matej Gabrovec, Assoc. Prof.
Dr. Franci Gabrovšek, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nadja Zupan Hajna, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Martin
Knez, Assist. Prof. Dr. Janez Nared, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metka Petrič, Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Tanja Pipan, Assist. Prof. Dr. Jurij Senegačnik, Prof. Dr. Tadej Slabe, Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Stanka Šebela, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matija Zorn and the assistant Eneja Baloh. The cur-
rent head of the Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gregor Kovačič, succeeded in this
role Prof. Dr. Milan Bufon (2001/02—2006/07), Prof. Dr. Anton Gosar (2007/08—
