Personalised Care for People with Dementia, Case Study:
DEOS Horjul Centre for the Elderly
It is estimated that around 70 of people in care homes suffer from dementia
or severe memory problems. For their well-being and that of caregivers, it is
important that they are provided with comprehensive care, and not just ade-
quate nutrition and safety, as the basic guidelines of institutional care. How-
ever, providing integrated care in an institutional setting in a care home poses
several challenges. Care homes face many challenges in ensuring quality of life
for people with dementia in their environment. Although the quality of life is
defined on an individual basis, the review of the literature, and the analysis of
the suggestions of employees based on the observation of the well-being and
behaviour of the residents during the implementation of changes to improve
care in the case study allows us to identify factors that are related to the quality
of life of people with dementia in institutions.
