children are able to understand simple sentences and to reconstruct narra-
tives with the help of pictures (Paulick & Groot-Wilken, 2009).

             Word Recognition Tasks
             Thefirst readingcomprehension assessment taskswith YLswillrequirelearn-
ers to recognise simple words. As we can see in the tasks in Figure 13.6 (the
original instructions were in learners’ L1), learners need to match the words
with pictures. The task is made more difficult by including more words than
test items, which decreases the chance of choosing the right answer by
             guessing.

             True/False Task
In true/false tasks, we present a series of statements related to a picture or
story or passage and ask learners to determine if each statement is true or
false. In the task in Figure 13.7, learners need to understand the sentences in
order to be able to match them with the right person.
