ARTMENT OF ITALIAN STUDIES

The Department of Italian Studies was established in 2005 by fusing various re-
search areas of the Italian language in a single structure and has thus become a ref-
erence point of the University of Primorska in terms of disciplinary areas such as
didactics of Italian, Italian language, Italian literature and culture, translation. The
proximity of Italy is an important advantage in terms of internationalization process-
es and promotion of the Italian civilization. The Department takes pride in a long
tradition of cooperation with Italian Universities, Italian Institute of Culture in Lju-
bljana and it acts as a catalyst for Universities in the Balkans.

A rich and articulate research activity aims at a constant knowledge update, knowl-
edge and cultural heritage promotion, development of dialogue between cultures
and individuals, along with fostering a critical confrontation of various views. In time,
it has developed strong relations both within the immediate environment and with
national and international realities.

The Department’s activities encourage interaction between research and didactics
so as to train competitive and innovative professionals, capable of competing on the
job market. Particular attention is paid to a constant upgrade of study programs, as
well as to the coordination of competences developed within different courses, in-
cluding various interdisciplinary competences, to the development of innovative di-
dactic methodologies and to internationalisation of knowledge by hosting qualified
international experts.

The Department employs 10 lecturers. The principal field of their research are Ital-
ian literature, language, philology, didactics of Italian as a first, second and a foreign
language.

The Department’s activities extend also to constant in-service teacher training in
collaboration with the national Institute of Education.

The Department offers four study courses, i.e., an undergraduate course, two
graduate courses (a linguistic and a pedagogical one) and a PhD course. The under-
graduate and graduate courses direct students towards a teaching career as well as
towards a career in other fields, such as language mediation, Italian language and cul-
