YEARS OF THE FACULTY OF HUMANITIES,
UNIVERSITY OF PRIMORSKA
2000 – 2020
According to official records, the Faculty of Humanities Koper was officially estab-
lished in Koper in the summer of 2000. It was founded by the University Study Cen-
tre of Koper and entered into the register of legal entities at the District Court of
Koper on 14 September, 2000.
Now, in 2020, a full twenty years have passed since the Faculty’s inception. At twen-
ty, a person is still deemed young, while for a faculty, twenty years are considered
just the beginning of the road, the initial steps that secure and consolidate its place in
the world and in the environment in which it is set. Such would be the view through
the eyes of researchers who peruse the past and judge time in terms of length and
distance. Yet, we know that these were two decades of intense engagement, a pe-
riod of development and growth, a crucial span of time for the future of the Faculty.
We like to emphasize that we are situated in the historic centre of Koper and that
our activities bring back the spirit of humanism to the old town centre. We try to
continue and further enhance the centuries-old tradition of humanistic education
that has been developing in the city since the 14th century. The humanities, human-
ists and humanism have always been the mirror and the driving force of society.
They promote a critical, fresh view of the world, of the present, the past and the fu-
ture.
The humanities, the arts and social sciences give each university a backbone, a
breadth and diversity of views, thus creating an appropriate balance between vari-
ous academic disciplines both at university level and in society as a whole. While cel-
ebrating the 20th anniversary of the Faculty of Humanities, it is also appropriate to
underscore the broad range of our pedagogical work, our research power, our in-
ternational involvement and, last but not least, the contribution we make to our so-
cial and cultural environment.
