Methodological Biases in Social Sciences:
Shaping Methodological Choice
This article delves into the covertly operating bias effect within modern sci-
ence, which pertains to intentional or unintentional avoidance of qualitative
methodology in favour of quantitative. In this context, we inquire about how
such a phenomenon shapes the scientific community’s attitude towards dif-
ferent methodological approaches and consequently the diversity of scientific
insights in the social sciences. Central to this is the examination of the concept
of the knowledge society, within which we are confronted with the premise
that scientific insights must serve societal progress to the greatest extent pos-
sible. This situation fosters the development of a positivist mindset within the
scientific community, grounded in the mathematical attribution of value to re-
search. From this perspective, the article also addresses the methodological
dispute between proponents of quantitative and qualitative research. We con-
clude by emphasizing that methodological choices are shaped by psycholog-
ical, sociological, and educational factors, underscoring the need for a better
understanding of such relationships within various scientific disciplines. The
article highlights the need for an analysis of the use of methodology within
students’ theses, conducting interviews with researchers, editors of scientific
journals and doctoral students.
