VERSITY OF PRIMORSKA LANGUAGE CENTRE

The mission of the University of Primorska Language Centre is to provide all its stu-
dents, employees, as well as interested members of the public, with the possibility
of learning foreign languages. Placed within an interactive multimedia environment,
our language courses are taught by native speakers and designed on the principles
of modern language-learning methods. We offer courses in a range of European and
non-European languages:
- English,
- Italian,
- French,
- Spanish,
- Russian, and
- Chinese.
Students of the University of Primorska can choose a foreign language course as
an external elective subject. The completion of each level takes one semester and
awards students with a total of 6 credits. Our courses are also open to university
employees and external participants. The University of Primorska Language Centre
conducts foreign language exams at different levels in accordance with the Common
European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). For each level, course
participants are awarded an officially recognised certificate of the acquired level of
language proficiency. The UP Language Centre also organises language training for
specific (professional) purposes. Our courses in academic English are particularly
popular with researchers and lecturers, as they effectively prepare them for com-
municating at conferences and writing research papers. External course participants
seem to be especially drawn to foreign-language summer schools, such as the Bon-
jour French language summer school and the Ciao Italian language summer school.
Also popoular are our workshops on interculturality and translation, and our short
(15-lesson) courses which focus on typical communication situations. The Universi-
ty of Primorska Language Centre offers translation and interpreting services. Not
least, our linguists conduct linguistic analyses in the fields of interculturality, statisti-
cal textual analysis and authorship attribution.
