teaching experience have professionally progressed and further developed the skills re-
quired for a good mentor or supervisor. Such experience motivates the professors and
encourages them to stay on top of the current teaching trends and remain actively en-
gaged within the teaching institution. It can be assumed that their constant learning and
progression gives them an insight in the current trends of musical education within the
wind instruments teaching practices.
Our study`s results have shown the strong interlink between instrumental teaching and
practical teaching experience, since the students tend to alter their own practicing tech-
niques due to the insights learned during the practical teaching experience. In addition,
beneficial impact of practical teaching experience on the student’s developing pedagog-
ical competences has been observed. Nonetheless, the study interestingly showed high
percentage of students admitting that their practical teaching experience encouraged
them to analyse and approach music compositions from different perspectives, which as-
sists tackling specific technical and interpretative elements of the composition. On the
contrary, the ability to deal with the administrative documents and familiarisation with
laws and legislations within the educational departments, have been ranked as the least
valued competences gained during the practical teaching experience. Subject specific
competences ranked by professors were assessed based on two categories. Competenc-
es obtained while studying at university, which were assessed as less valuable and compe-
tences obtained during practical pedagogic experiences. Increasing the range of practi-
cal teaching experiences during the course of student`s education, could therefore have
beneficial impact also on competences` valuation by prospect professors, since our re-
search, recognised significant differences among valuation of the subject-specific com-
petences within the pedagogic field.
Academy of Music at University Ljubljana offers practical teaching experience only dur-
ing postgraduate course Instrumental and vocal pedagogic. Placing it at the end of stu-
dent’s education path, it is ensured they have gained the necessary core knowledge of the
instrument first. However, due to the constructive impact the practical teaching expe-
rience has shown, it might be beneficial to incorporate pedagogical modules in the un-
dergraduate courses as well. Through such modules students will be introduced to the
pedagogical trends and techniques in the early stages of their education. The knowledge
would be further developed and put into practice during the postgraduate course. Mod-
ifications in the teaching system would stimulate development of scientific research
within the field of instrumental and vocal education, based on the wind professors’ early
teaching experience research. Advances in understanding the impacts of practical teach-
ing experiences, would improve their value extent within the educational programmes.
