isation of literary events and creative writing workshops. We have recently de-
veloped a mobile phone application aimed at the promotion of language learning.
In collaboration with our students, we organise a series of events entitled Poetry
in Translation. Our Days of Russian and Chinese Culture, and our Bonjour French
language summer school have also enjoyed considerable popularity. We are work-
ing closely with Confucius Classroom (Konfucijeva učilnica), a learning hub which of-
fers a diverse range of programmes and events. In collaboration with the Kino Otok
film festival, our students are trained in subtitling, and are given the possibility to
attend the Alpe-Adria summer school as well as the annual film workshop with a
renowned international film director (at the courtesy of KinoAtelje from Gorica).
Our department cooperates with various institutions, such as the Charles Nodier
French Institute, the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, the Vesela dRuščina In-
stitute, AEISEC and others.

Students are our partners

At the Department of Applied Linguistics, students are included in practical pro-
jects during the course of their studies, which allows them to hone their language
skills and sharpen their competencies in translation and intercultural mediation.

Our students have participated in the making of the Russian-Slovenian and Slove-
nian-Russian Dictionary for Beginners, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the
Republic of Slovenia. They also translate into French for the House of Experiments
(Hiša eksperimentov), learning how to render complex technical texts more ac-
ceptable to the younger public. Our students have also translated a collection of es-
says by Emma Goldman from English to Slovene.

As part of their placement, Master’s degree students acquaint themselves with the
organisation of work in a university publishing house. They familiarise themselves
with editorial work procedures and the basics of typesetting, and they practice their
translation and proofreading skills by tackling research article abstracts.
