ARTMENT OF SLOVENE STUDIES

The Department of Slovene Studies at the Faculty of Humanities of the University
of Primorska was established in 2004. The first students of the undergraduate study
program Slovene Studies were enrolled in the academic year 2004/2005. In the aca-
demic year 2007/2008, students began to study at the Bologna 1st level and can lat-
er continue their studies at the 2nd or 3rd Bologna levels.

Since 2013, the renewed study program, in addition to classical Slovene subjects,
also offers subjects that improve the employability of graduates after the 1st level of
study - in addition to classical professions (such as proofreading), they are trained
to work in publishing, where they can work independently as (book) editors, espe-
cially in modern digital publishing. At the same time, students acquire the necessary
didactic knowledge for teaching Slovene as a second or foreign language, which en-
ables them to teach foreigners at language schools or in other more or less formal
forms of similar teaching. Students can upgrade the acquired knowledge at the sec-
ond level, which allows them to be employed in the education sector; they are edu-
cated especially in didactic subjects that will enable them to teach Slovene language
and literature at primary or secondary schools. PhD studies are intended primarily
for those students who want to deepen their research in literature or linguistics and
who aim at a possible academic or research path later.

The philosophy of our department is to approach students as individuals - we try
to focus on individual work with students as much as possible, in an atmosphere of
mentoring each one of them, that complements the ex-cathedra lectures, exercis-
es, and seminar work.

This not only allows more dynamic work concerning the diverse needs of students
but also encourages their creativity. This kind of approach of work encourages stu-
dents to participate in symposiums, in the radio section ‘Kotiček za jeziček’, which
has been running since 2014 and which is the recipient of the Prometheus Science
Award for excellence in communication, at the cultural and artistic event SloVečeri, in
the Lecturer’s Circle or at Summer Courses of the Slovene language on the Slovene coast
“Hello, this is the Slovene Mediterranean”.
