part of the student’s study path. A review of the literature shows that the field
of thesis supervision is under-researched. Based on a quantitative survey of
graduate students (n = 252), it was found that students’ main concerns when
choosing a thesis supervisor are the supervisor’s responsiveness and the su-
pervisor’s expertise in the field being studied and taught. The results indicate
that the most frequent communication between mentor and mentee is via
email. The older the respondents were, the less communication via email and
the more face-to-face communicationwas present. Students who had face-to-
face communication with their mentor had more meetings and interactions
with their mentor throughout the process of producing their final work. On
the other hand, it is worth pointing out that there is no training for mentors,
even though mentoring is an important part of a higher education teacher’s
professional development.
