Austrian music schools are also facing different kinds of challenges. The demographic
change will cause an increase of senior citizens (+6.1 %) and a decrease of people under
19 years of age (-1.1 %) until 2030. Also limited public funding plays an important role for
music schools. One challenging issue for music schools from the last years until now is the
expansion of all-day schools by the ministry of education. If the pupils spend the whole
day in school, time slots for extracurricular instrumental or singing lessons are more and
more limited. But the Austrian music schools use these challenges as potentials for further
development. They create new offers for elderly people, include more group lessons and
combined forms of music lessons and start cooperating with public schools. As a support
for this cooperation in 2013, the ministry of education developed different models of
collaboration. These models start from a simple spatial cooperation until close-partnered
collaborations during music lessons or during after-school child care.
