Summary

The main purpose of the monograph is to research, study and present strat-
egies for promoting the acquisition of musical-pianistic concepts and skills
through the broadly conceived areas of piano instruction. To this end, it
analytically, systematically and comparatively analyses certain basic are-
as of piano didactics, from teacher skills and relational dynamics with the
student, lesson planning and teaching methods, to concepts and skills of
learning the piano, as well as the developmental characteristics of children
in relation to musical development. It covers listening skills, rhythmic con-
cepts and skills, reading concepts and skills, as well as technical, creative
and musical skills, and provides learning and teaching strategies through
the prism of contemporary, student-centred approaches that enable com-
prehensive, holistic musical-pianistic development.

We find that in the Slovenian education system, the majority of teach-
ers adopt a “traditional” approach to piano instruction, focused on learn-
ing new compositions, technical-musical production, and interpretation of
notated musical works. Some areas of piano instruction do not have such
an important place. This was further confirmed by a survey of the attitudes
of 95 piano teachers from Slovenian public music schools on the inclusion
of improvisation in piano instruction. Teachers have positive attitudes and
experiences regarding the incorporation of improvisation in piano instruc-
tion. They believe that it plays an important role in many aspects of the mu-
sical activity and musical development of students, but they nonetheless
