Learning and Teaching Statistics during the Remote Learning Period
We encounter statistics on a daily basis, as statistical literacy is crucial for better
decision-making and for the proper interpretation of data. Although statistics
is an important science, many students and adults still have great difficulty
understanding and using basic statistical concepts. That is why learning and
teaching statistics is important. In this paper, we present the reasons for learn-
ing and teaching statistics and the model for learning and teaching it in pri-
mary and secondary school. The model shows that practical experience and
empiricism play an important role in learning and teaching statistics in primary
school, as students learn basic statistical concepts, observation, data collec-
tion, their representation and correct interpretation through experiments and
connections to everyday experience. In addition, high school students face
more complex problems from everyday life. The paper presents some guide-
lines for mathematics teachers and enriches them with examples of good prac-
tice used by teachers during distance learning.
