Models and Techniques for Handling Ethically Sensitive
Situations
Abstract
Ethical decision-making is influenced by multiple factors: cognitive,
emotional, and others, including those related to neurobiology,
personality, self-awareness, and the social environment. Therefore,
there are several implications for teaching ethics and ethical
decision-making in psychology. While most efforts to teach ethics
in psychology in the 20th century focused on the importance of
rational factors, the current emphasis in teaching ethics is based
on methods that combine the influence of emotions and other
non-rational factors with the influence of rational ones (Korkut
and Sinclair, 2020). In the present article, we will talk about
both. In the first part, we present different cognitive models that
encourage the process of ethical decision-making and effective
ethical behaviour in psychologists. In the second part, various
techniques and exercises are presented that address our emotional,
motivational, personality and other characteristics, also with the
aim of strengthening ethical sensitivity and the most effective
ethical behaviour of psychologists (case studies, role-playing,
self-reflection, effective thinking techniques, critical thinking,
exploration of values, active listening, mindfulness). Teaching
and training in the field of ethics should be a key component of
the curriculum at the undergraduate and postgraduate level of
psychology studies (Korkut, 2020) and a mandatory element
of lifelong professional development and supervision in the
profession of psychologist.
