Portrayals of Old Age in Newspapers, Magazines, on Television,
and the Web
The media transmit knowledge, beliefs and values, shape social attitudes, nat-
uralise a set of acceptable social identities, and influence our perception of the
world around us. Considering the role that the media plays in the social con-
struction of old age, this chapter reviews selected world and domestic schol-
arly literature on media portrayals of old age and highlights the effects that
positive and negative portrayals of old age in the media can have on individual
and societal perceptions of old age, and on intergenerational relations. Partic-
ular attention is paid to the differences between different types of media, as
research shows that portrayals of old age in newspapers are generally more
negative than in the magazine press and television, while old-age portrayals
on the internet are highly ambivalent.
