The Slovenian Version of the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT-12)
and the Role of Personality in Predicting Burnout in Teachers
Given the nature of their work, teachers are one of the professional categories
at higher risk of developing burnout, leading to poorer physical and mental
health. Previous research has shown that preventive assessment of teachers’
risk level for burnout may reduce adverse outcomes. The aim of the study was
first to examine the psychometric properties of the short form of the Burnout
Assessment Tool-12 (BAT-12) in Slovenian teachers, and secondly to investigate
the role of personality in predicting burnout. The study included 430 primary
school teacherswho completed the BAT-12 and the Big Five Inventory (BFI). The
Slovenian version of BAT-12 showed good factorial validity, with the four sub-
scales (exhaustion, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, and mental
distancing) loading on a single burnout score. Regression analysis results indi-
cated that higher neuroticism, lower conscientiousness and lower agreeable-
ness, as well as fixed-term employment, play a significant role in predicting
higher burnout scores in Slovenian teachers.
