by Applying STEM Competencies

A new approach to education, with a focus on student competencies, over
the traditional (teacher-centered) approach requires a shift towards a new
student-centered teaching approach. The paper shows how to achieve an
integrated curricular approach in the field of natural sciences and informat-
ics. Teaching courses within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) area in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) are Engineering and In-
formation Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geog-
raphy. The integrated curriculum includes a combination of subjects, other
sources besides textbooks, more flexible scheduling, focus on projects, rela-
tionships between concepts to achieve a single goal. Cross-curricular integra-
tion is based on a competency-based approach using STEM disciplines. This
competency-based approach to learning outcomes influences the process of
improving the education system in BiH which should lead to better student
achievement.

Introduction
Current education systems in primary and secondary schools in Bosnia and
Herzegovina are based on curricula that are essentially the sum of content
to be delivered in particular subjects, appropriate to the developmental age
of students. The content structure is defined by classes, so the goals of the
educational activity refer to classes composed of groups of students of the
same age. The educational process in the schools is guided by the curricula,
i.e. contents that the teacher is obliged to process with the students during
one school year as a time unit.

The new approach to education strategy is moving away from asking what
content student needs to master during one school year and focusing on the
issue of outcomes, i.e. what student of a certain age needs to know and what
skills and attitudes he needs to develop, not focusing on one school year as
a time period but on an extended period of time which does not have to be
strictly specified. This approach, called the curriculum approach, is focused
