Ethical Content in Music-Psychological Research
Abstract
Ethics in music has a long history, as the question of the effects of
music on the good and the bad in the individual and the community
has been with us since the very beginnings of human civilization.
The ethics of music is linked to the original evolutionary function of
music, promoting holistic wellbeing in the individual and society.
On the other hand, the ethics of music-psychological research has
a short history, as the field has not received sufficient attention
except in isolated cases (Sloboda, 2005). In this paper, we aim to
illustrate the connection between music and ethics; we present
ethical dilemmas in music therapy and music education that are
transferable to the field of music-psychological research. Finally,
we highlight some concrete ethical dilemmas. We anticipate
that ethical dilemmas in music-psychology research will receive
increasing attention in the coming years. The utility of music as
a non-pharmacological means of promoting holistic wellbeing is
increasing but is complex and needs to be grounded in content and
methodology.

clientele. Moreover, it applies to psychologists practising in
Slovenia as well as in the United Kingdom. This chapter describes
a few ethical dilemmas that psychologists can face when working
in a modern multicultural society. We talk about the cultural
sensitivity of psychological methods, (inequalities in) accessibility
of psychological services, cultural-related research biases, and a
