The Teacher’s Personality as a Factor in Teacher-Student Rapport
                  in Higher Education
Teacher-student rapport is a concept that refers to one of the factors in the
classroom setting that promotes desired student academic behaviours. The
purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of personality traits
of university teachers on teacher-student rapport. Contrary to our predictions,
the results showed that teacher agreeableness did not predict the teacher-
student rapport. The other Big Five personality traits of the teacher also did
not predict rapport. This is not consistent with the results of previous studies.
We hypothesise that the expected relationship between agreeableness and
rapport did not occur because teacher self-reported measures of personality
traits were used. We conclude that students’ experience of rapport is likely to
be more influenced by their subjective perception of the teacher, who proba-
bly does not fully express their personality in front of the students but controls
their behaviour more in the lecture hall than in other contexts.
