Motives for Choosing a Teaching Profession among Slovenian
and Croatian Students
Considering the shortage of teaching staff, attracting capable and motivated
candidates to teaching professions is a special challenge. Therefore, it is im-
portant to investigate what motivates individuals to choose a teaching pro-
fession. The article presents the results of research on the motives of Slovenian
and Croatian students for choosing the early and preschool teaching profes-
sion, their professional motivation and plans they have for continuing their
career path. The research showed that internal and intrinsic motives dominate
at the beginning, but a portion of the students wrote that external motives,
especially the financial aspect, became more important to them during their
studies. We found that although the majority of students want to be employed
in the early and preschool teaching profession, there are 42.7 of those who,
after their initial employment in the profession, see themselves in other pro-
fessions. This proportion is higher among Slovenian students.
