The Inclusion of the Youngest: The Importance of Establishing
Departments with an Adapted Programme within Regular Kindergartens
A core value of an inclusive society, which is also highlighted in the Act on
Integrated Early Treatment of Preschool Children with Special Needs (2017), is
ensuring that children with special needs and their families receive the earli-
est possible, professional and integrated treatment in their local communities.
In this spirit, it makes sense to promote the establishment of adapted units
for preschool children within regular kindergartens and to enable families to
remain connected to their environment and peers. In this paper, we present
some of the conditions for setting up such adapted units and the results of
an empirical study which sought to gain insight into the experiences of pro-
fessionals working in adapted units in regular kindergartens. Through a ques-
tionnaire completed by 60 female professionals and in-depth interviews with
four of them, we found out about their views of integration, but also about
the partly unsatisfactory conditions. This obliges us to increase our concern
for the ecosystemic development of conditions for the successful inclusion of
the youngest.
