The Effect of Distance Learning on Physical Activity and Academic
Performance among Primary School Students in Prekmurje
Distance learning has proven to be an effective solution for continuing edu-
cation in unpredictable circumstances, such as infectious disease epidemics.
However, despite its successful implementation, students’ lifestyles could de-
teriorate. This study aimed to investigate students’ physical activity in the con-
text of distance learning and traditional classroom learning and its impact on
academic performance during the COVID-19 epidemic. An on-site survey of
198 primary school students in the Prekmurska region revealed regular physi-
cal activity with a higher intensity during face-to-face classes. Physical activity,
especially walking, contributes significantly to better academic performance.
Therefore, all pupils should be offered sufficient frequency and intensity of
physical activity in the post-pandemic period.
