The Importance of Financial Education in Elementary School:
An Overview of the Financial Knowledge of Fifth Graders
Financial literacy encompasses financial knowledge and skills, a work in prog-
ress that should start at an early age. While financial decisions were not com-
plex in the past, the opposite is true today. At thesametime, thereisagrow-
ing need for individuals to have a higher level of financial literacy in order
to behave responsibly in society. Financial education, which impacts the de-
velopment of financial literacy, is at the forefront of this process and should
start as early as primary school. Given that research on financial literacy among
young people is rare in Slovenia and that financial topics are included in the
primary school curriculum, the research presented in this paper aimed to find

year. Based on the resultsof a knowledge test administered to 155 fifth-graders,
we found that most of the participants had a medium level of understanding
of financial concepts and a medium level of financial problem-solving skills.
