First steps towards better knowledge
of the Adriatic region
Over the centuries the Adriatic region has made a significant contribution
to the development of European cultural and musical history. Particularly
significant, in this context, are the overseas connections that enabled those
born on the eastern shore of the Adriatic to train and study on the west-
ern shore, above all in Venice. In this article the author offers a brief over-
view of composers with links to the two shores of the Adriatic Sea, either
by virtue of their birthplace or as a result of migration. For the time being
this is merely a preliminary list, which is far from being complete. It con-
tains the names of musicians known to date, along with their essential bi-
ographical details. The author’s aim is to draw attention to the importance
of these musicians, frequently overlooked by Western musical history. As
well as composers and musicians, the author mentions the neoclassical or-
gan building school of Pietro Nachini (aka Petar Nakić) and Gaetano Cal-
lido – organ builders who worked on both shores of the Adriatic.

Theatre Company of Emanuel Schikaneder in Ljubljana
in 1779/80 and 1781/82 – reconsidering the historical
significance of its productions
The repertoire, which the German theatre company of Emanuel Schikaned-
er staged in Ljubljana in the winter seasons 1779/80 and 1781/82, sheds light
on the ways and the manner in which the German-language repertoire was
disseminated at the end of the eighteenth century to the periphery of the
Austrian Monarchy. Less than one half of performances constituted musi-
cal productions and approximately one tenth ballets. The audience heard,
among others, the historically important original musical works in Ger-
man – Hiller’s singspiels and also Viennese singspiel of Umlauff, which her-
alded a new major repertoire inflow of this genre from Vienna to the Lju-
bljana theatre stage. The absence of sources makes it impossible to assess the
quality of Schikaneder’s musical productions staged in Ljubljana. The two
librettos, printed in Ljubljana for Schikaneder’s performances, which the
previous research not thoroughly investigated, constitute important his-
torical sources along with other scarce sources that were accidentally pre-
served. The opera texts reveal some peculiarities when compared to texts of
