other performances. The production of the Benda’s opera Der Barbier von
Seville was presumably the first staging of the adaptation of popular Beau-
marchais’s text in the German language in Ljubljana and one of the earli-
est in the Austrian territory. By performing Paisiello’s opera La frascatana,
Schikaneder catered to the taste of Ljubljana’s audience, which favoured
Italian opera, and by using the German translation followed the latest cul-
tural-political trends in German and Austrian milieus. An especially val-
uable source is the libretto Das Mädchen von Fraskati, the German trans-
lation of the Livigni’s text for the opera La frascatana, which was printed
for the Schikaneder Company in Ljubljana in 1782. The then popular Ital-
ian opera La frascatana was produced in Ljubljana with the German text
a year before than in Vienna. The eight lines of translation in the Sloveni-
an language, inserted into the German text, testify that educated, Italian-
and German-speaking citizens heard on the stage also vernacular, provin-
cial language.

Jan Václav Lego – a Herald of Slovene-Czech Reciprocity
The paper offers a brief outline of the work of this Czech cultural activist
and writer, who worked among the Slovenes in the period 1857–1870. A state
official and a lawyer, Jan Lego was also a great advocate of Slavic reciproci-
ty, which he attempted to encourage among the Slovenes. He focused on the
work of cultural awakening, played a part in the organisation of societies
dedicated to national awakening, and offered assistance and advice to stu-
dents. He also kept the Czech public informed about conditions in Slove-
nia. His guide to Slovenia Průvodce po Slovinsku (1887) and his Czech-Slo-
vene grammar Mluvnice jazyka slovinskeho (1883 and 1892) were of great
importance for Slovene-Czech cooperation.
