picking and harvesting of healing herbs).

Learning and Teaching – Activity: Working in Groups – Six Hats
Six hats is a creative problem solving technique that allows students to
collaborate, seeing the problem from different perspectives. The school
class is divided into six groups, and each group practices one approach
to the problem.
The teacher asks a problem question for all groups of students: How
to create a successful system of production and processing of healing
herbs, which will bring positive effects in the development of the local
community?

– The white hat is interested in information and facts about healing herbs.
What do we know about healing herbs?
How healing herbs are properly harvested and dried?
What is made of herbs?

– The black hat calls for caution.
Why and when would it not be good to collect herbs?
What dangers and challenges are lurking in the collection of medicinal
herbs?

– The green hat is a creative hat for finding new ideas.
What herbs could be grown in a plantation, what does it take?
The challenge for students is to make an essential oil distillation appara-
tus, using knowledge of physics and chemistry.

– The red hat lets students express their emotions by answering the fol-
lowing questions:
What are the main reasons why we love/want to grow and/or process
healing herbs?
Are there any reasons why one does not want to cultivate and process
medicinal herbs?
Tea selection and packaging can be done by students in biology classes.

– The yellow hat wants to find all that is positive about the cultivation and
processing of medicinal herbs.
What are the biggest benefits of growing, producing and processing
healing herbs?
What are the reasons why one would initiate the cultivation, production
and processing of healing herbs?
Students can research how much rosemary, lavender, immortelle, etc. it
takes to make 100 ml of essential oil. The results can be presented in ta-
bles and graphically.

– The blue hat is reserved for a teacher, or a student in charge of consider-
ing the discussion and reflection process.
