Conducting Online Surveys with Third Grade Pupils
The literature review in the area of surveying children poses several ques-
tions related to the reliability and validity of data gained directly (without a
proxy) from this age group, especially considering the children’s cognitive,
communicative and social abilities. There is a general agreement among the
researchers in the field that cognitive development is a key factor in identify-
ing attitudes, opinions etc. of children in different age groups. The paper first
explores the procedure for designing a questionnaire for the purpose of identi-
fying pupils’ attitudes towards different languages and multilingualism which
is one of the aims of the project ‘Languages Count.’ The results suggest that
children often understand the questions and statements literally which is in
line with the findings of other studies in the field. The second part of the study
is geared towards identifying the benefits and possible drawbacks of using on-
line surveys with pupils in the third grade.
Keywords: surveying children, online surveys, online questionnaires, cognitive
development, designing questionnaires
