Speech Therapy for Stuttering: Exploring the Past and the Present
Stuttering usually occurs in childhood and causes problems in verbal commu-
nication, affecting all areas of the child’s functioning. The change in under-
standing stuttering that has occurred throughout history has led to changes
in support and help for people with stutters. Today’s speech-language therapy
professional practice is diverse. The purpose of the present study was to inves-
tigate the understanding of stuttering over time and to gain insight into the
professional practices of speech-language therapists (SLTs) as well as their self-
assessment of competencies in stuttering management. In Slovenia, therapy
takes place in school and health care settings, so we were interested in possible
