Parents’ Opinions about the Use of Screens in Connection with Selected
Movement Activities of Preschool Children
In this paper we analyse some of the relationships between screen use and se-
lected aspects of physical activity. The survey sample consisted of 471 parents
of preschool children from different parts of Slovenia. The data were collected
using a questionnaire. We found a correlation between the time parents and
children spend in front of screens, from the age of 2, but this was only statisti-
cally significant from the age of 4 years. In addition, we found an inverse pro-
portionality between outdoor physical activity and time in front of screens,
meaning that children who spent a longer time in front of screens are out-
side less, which is the case for 2-, 3- and 6-year-olds. The analysis also showed
an inversely proportional relationship for both gross motor skills, which is also
statistically significant from the age of 4 (p < 0.05), and fine motor skills (5-year-
olds, r = –0.344, p < 0.05 and 6-year-olds, r =–0.493, p <0.05).
