Introduction: Impaired metabolic health is the most common chronic metabolic dis-
ease in the developed world. It is the second most important preventable cause of
increased morbidity and mortality (after smoking). Numerous studies have demon-
strated the impact of metabolic health disorders on the accelerated development of
atherosclerosis. A few years ago, the Spanish Society of Neurosonography published
that 28% of stroke survivors had visible ultrasonographic changes in the carotid arter-
ies. The common carotid arteries are the most easily accessible arteries for ultrasono-
graphic examination and for performing certain measurements that are early indica-
tors of the development of atherosclerosis. In a 3-month study conducted at the UP
Faculty of Health Sciences, we examined the impact of time-restricted eating on met-
abolic health parameters in overweight subjects, including ultrasonographic parame-
ters of the common carotid arteries.
Methods: We recruited 108 overweight (obese) person, between 18 and 60 years of
age with a body mass index between 25 and 35 kg/m . All subjects were on a pre-
2
scribed energy restriction and were divided into 3 groups: group 1 was allowed to eat
for an unlimited period of time (8 am to 8 pm), group 2 was allowed to eat during the
morning time window (8 am to 4 pm), and group 3 - during the evening time window
(12 pm to 8 pm). In addition to biochemical and anthropometric measurements, ul-
trasonographic measurements of the common carotid arteries were performed: in-
tima-media thickness (IMT), peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end-diastolic velocity
(EDV). All measurements were performed at baseline and then after 3 months.
Results: We tested whether there were differences between groups at baseline and
at the end of the intervention using ANOVA for the following parameters: left PSV
(p=0.687), right PSV (p=0.891) and left IMT (p=0.484) for the first measurement, and
left IMT (p=0.658), right IMT (p=0.713) and right PSV (p=0.547) for the second meas-
urement. We found no statistically significant difference between the groups for any
of the measurements. The effect of the intervention was statistically significant for the prehrana in zdravje delovno aktivnih in starejših odraslih | nutrition and health of working-age and older adults
blood velocity measurements (p<0.05).
Discussion and conclusions: We can conclude that the three-month intervention with
energy restriction already shows the beneficial effects on the condition of the com-
mon carotid arteries, but the limited eating window does not give any additional ad-
vantage. In the follow-up, it would be necessary to determine which biochemical pa-
rameters improve upon weight loss, and whether they are the reason of improvement
of the condition of the blood vessels.
