bare in mind the political and social circumstances as well as the insufficiency of the
Slovene and general cultural tradition of Maribor. We have to emphasize the lack of
qualified cadre and financial resources, which often caused disharmony within the
society. There was also a problem with the society’s premises which was too small and
was cancelled in the late 30s. In spite all that the school GM Maribor gained a respectable
position in the Slovenian place. The students not only participated on school shows but
also, mostly the most successful ones, performed on the society shows of GM and other
educational institutions. Participating in the choir and society orchestra as well as chamber
orchestra they presented the main body of musical performers and educated persons in
Maribor. The functioning of the GM Maribor is comparable with its model in Ljubljana.
Both institutions were, regarding to the number of population, attended by the same
amount of students; the number of teachers employed was also equal. These facts are
proof for a reasonable organization and the rapid growth of musical education in Maribor.
As regards the teaching methods on the music school GM Maribor we can only suspect
that they were in accordance with the education and experience of individual teachers.
There is no detailed information about the teaching methods, used didactic materials or
literature. In connection with didactic methods it is only possible to present very rare
attempts of editions of pedagogical materials in GM Maribor. The activities of the music
school GM and all its happenings were carefully observed by the Slovene and German
journalists. Reviews were signed by some reputable music artists, what also shows the
effort and responsible work of the institution that lies beneath.
The fundaments of educating the musical youth in town and its neighborhood lied in the
hands of leading pedagogues of the music school GM Maribor. They were educated and
respected musicians, leaders of different institutions and orchestras, solo artists,
composers and later professors on different academies and some of the most reputable
Slovene music personalities of the 20th century ( Fran Topiè, Jan Šlais, Ru ena Šlais,
Emerik Beran, Hinko Druzoviè, Franjo Serajnik, Josip Hladek Bohinjski, Vasilij Mirk
Karol Pahor, Ubald Vrabec, Taras Poljanec, Oton Bajde, dr. Roman Klasinc, Èenda
Šedlbauer, Marjan Kozina, Fanika Brandl, Marija Fin gar and Zora Ropas). Their
musical-educational achievements are finally nationally and internationally proved by
their students; former students of the music school GM Maribor (soprano Marica Lubej,
