Summary
The Ljubljana Dramatic Society [Dramatièno društvo], founded in 1867 with the purpose
of establishing a permanent theatre stage with professional actors, stated in the
fundamental points of its rules that it would provide a systematic education in acting and
singing and, in this way, maintain a decent level of performing theatre or music theatre
works. From 1869, as part of the so-called “dramatic classroom”, which should have
exceeded the amateur level of the reading rooms [èitalnice], the Society provided
education for amateur actors and singers of different ages. Its teachers were Josip Nolli,
Dragojila Odijeva, Anton Foerster, Vojteh Valenta, Jurij Schantl, Anton Heidrich and
even Anton Stöckl. In this time, a single person was expected to have both singing and
acting skills. The Society’s dramatic school, which was active at intervals, made an
important step towards educating professional music and theatre teachers in Slovenia.
