The Development of Music-Related Motor Skills of Young Musicians
as a Connection for Interdisciplinary Integration of Kinesiology
and Music Education
Professional approaches and interdisciplinary integration beyond the exist-
ing music education system represent new trends in the development of
young musicians and offers numerous opportunities for the introduction of
integrated teaching methods. The aim of the study, performed as a part of
the project ‘Teaching music instruments adjusted to a young musician,’ was
to find out the development of music-related motor skills among 32 young
musicians from the Koper Music School, aged 7 to 16. For this purpose they
performed two tests which measure the eye-hand coordination (the ‘Non-
rhythmic tapping test’ and the ‘Hand wall Toss test’). From results we could
identify the trends of improvement in results in both tests of coordination
among young musicians of different grades. Test performance and progress
in results are statistically significantly different by the factors of (a)symmetry
of instrument playing load, limb dominance, and gender. Within the frame-
work of the general didactic guidelines in music education, interdisciplinary
and cross-curricular didactic guidelines should also be written, aimed at the
integrated care for the harmonious physical, motor, and musical development
of young musicians.
