Early Learning of Mathematics between Parents and Children
during a Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an extraordinary situation in the entire
field of education in the world and in Slovenia. School systems, teachers, ed-
ucators, parents, society and, above all, children have found themselves in a
completely new reality, whose far-reaching effects we are just beginning to
explore and identify. For future planning of work in the preschool field, there-
fore, research is necessary, covering all areas of preschool child development,
including the development of mathematical literacy of preschool children.
The main purpose of this research was to find out which math games parents
played with their preschool children at the time of the pandemic and the clo-
sure of kindergartens, and to find a connection between math content play
and gender, education and age of children. We found that there was no differ-
ence between the level and type of education of the parents and the types of
math games that they played with their children during the pandemic. Statis-
tically significant, however, is the choice of math games and the gender of the
parent.
Keywords: mathematical literacy, preschool mathematics, cooperation with
parents, mathematical games, mathematical games between parents and chil-
dren
