Practical Training during Distance Learning through the Eyes of Social
Pedagogy Students
Social pedagogy belongs to the so-called practical sciences where theory
‘serves’ practice. Preparing for social pedagogical practice, which is based on
professional relations with users in their life spaces, is at the forefront of profes-
sional training of social pedagogues. During the lockdown due to the COVID-
19 epidemic, the learning process was transferred online and this brought the
practical training to a halt and alternative ways were sought. The qualitative
research included 15 Master’s degree students of social pedagogy at the Uni-
versity of Primorska, Faculty of Education, and it focused on the problem of ac-
quiring practical knowledge, skills and competences or practical training dur-
ing distance learning as it was perceived by these social pedagogy students.
The interview analysis has shown the students experience social pedagogy as
a predominantly practical science. The students reported that their learning
process was impoverished due to COVID-19 restrictions, however, they recog-
nized some advantages of distance learning as well and they are aware of their
own responsibility for the learning process.
