Satisfaction with the Teaching Profession in Regions with National
Minorities in Slovenia, before, during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic
Teachers’ satisfaction with the teaching profession is one of the most impor-
tant predictors of teachers’ performance. In this paper, we are interested in
teachers’ job satisfaction, especially during and after the major changes dur-
ing the COVID-19 pandemic, and what we can learn from it for the future.
We focused on the views of 110 primary, secondary, and high school teach-
ers who teach in municipalities in the Coastal-Karst and Mura statistical re-
gions where members of the Italian and Hungarian minorities live in Slove-
nia. We hypothesised that teachers in ethnically mixed areas, in these regions,
are more stressed in terms of intercultural and linguistic diversity and conse-
quently less satisfied with their profession. The survey showed that there are
no statistically significant differences between teachers teaching in ethnically
mixed areas and those teaching in schools outside these areas in terms of their
attitudes towards satisfaction with the teaching profession, the impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic on the teaching profession, and how often they perceive
problems in their students today compared to before distance education due
to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, we made suggestions, based on the expe-
riences gained, on how to improve satisfaction with the teaching profession.
