Use of Geometric Tools in Textbooks: Then and Now
In this paper, we present a historical overview of the use of geometric tools
in textbooks for mathematics in elementary school in Slovenia over the last
hundred years in chosen topics in geometry. We focus specifically on drawing
parallel and perpendicular lines and on measuring angles. We note that until
the mid-1900s there was the use of the triangular ruler, straight ruler, and pro-
tractor. Then in a short period of time, these tools were joined by the geotri-
angle. For the last forty years, only the geotriangle has been used in teaching,
a geometric tool that combined the straight ruler, triangular ruler, and a pro-
tractor. At the end of the paper, we present some deliberation about the use of
geometric tools with the upcoming renewal of curricula in Slovenian schools.
Keywords: geometry, mathematics education, geometry tools, geotriangle
