part of the social sciences in the 21st century. However, there is limited method-
ological empirical evidence on the effectiveness of this methodological ap-
proach and its main dilemmas in research practice. Our study aimed to gain in-
sight into the opinions of internationally recognised experts about the quality
of mixed methods research in the social sciences. The results of nine interviews
based on qualitative content analysis highlighted the greater complexity of
mixed methods study compared to other methodological approaches, which
is related to particular problems in ensuring its quality, such as insufficient
integration, results unrelated to the methodology, and different quality as-
sessment criteria. The experts highlighted the importance of the researcher’s
knowledge. Methodological training, the development of new educational
programmes and their evaluation are essential starting points for the quality
of mixed methods research.
