Information Literacy: Developing the Concept from a Skill to a Mindset
Five decades ago, Paul Zurkowski first used the term ‘information literacy’ to
highlight the importance of education for managing the growing amount of
information. While it was sufficient in the beginning to have the skills to find,
evaluate and use information, today, in addition to a range of skills and com-
petencies, individuals must also desire continuous learning. The aim of this pa-
per was to examine how the concept of information literacy has evolved and
which social circumstances have influenced it. We were interested in the dif-
ferent definitions of the concept and how they have evolved in terms of the
development of individual skills and competencies. Based on the findings, we
tried to predict whether the competencies for the 21st century will be sufficient
for individuals to manage information successfully in the future. The develop-
ment of artificial intelligence will change the concept of information literacy,
and the critical evaluation of information will become even more important.
Those who follow progress will be distinguished from others by their informa-
tion literacy mindset and willingness to learn.
