Experiencing Distance Learning during the COVID-19 Epidemic among
Students of the University of Maribor
The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and the consequent declaration of a pan-
demic worldwide have significantly affected various aspects of people’s public
and private lives. The impact of the pandemic has been particularly intense in
the educational field at all levels of education. Overnight, education was trans-
ferred from classrooms to online environments, which led to new challenges
for both teachers and students. In this manuscript, the results of a study that
investigated students’ perspectives on different aspects of distance learning
at the University of Maribor during the COVID-19 epidemic are presented. 220
students from the University of Maribor participated in the study. The results
indicated that most of the students reported that they somehow coped with
distance learning. More than half of the participants reported a decline in con-
centration in studying and academic motivation, as well as some uncertainties
related to the course of distance learning. Although some other problems re-
lated to distance learning have been reported by a smaller proportion of stu-
dents, it is important not to ignore them. Their experience can be a starting
point for the consideration of possibilities for improving the quality of higher
education.
