From Bricks and Mortar to Bytes: The Evolution of Virtual Museums
Today, the museum, as a place of direct and personal learning, has brought to-
gether the physical and virtual worlds. The development of virtual reality and
virtual museums makes it possible to bring museum objects into a virtual en-
vironment with rich information content for educational purposes. However,
despite the technological progress we are witnessing in virtual reality and its
increasing use in various fields, the use of this technology in the museum field
is not yet progressing as fast as the rapid development of XR (augmented, vir-
tual and enriched reality) technology. To better understand the importance of
virtual museums, it is necessary to know the history of the development of
virtual reality and to use the correct terminology.
