A Historical Review of the Development of the Term
and Concept of Education Forms in Slovenia
Recent didactic literature distinguishes between four different forms of group-
ing students, i.e. forms of teaching, whose terms and definitions differ only
slightly. We want to investigate whether this has always been the case. By
analysing accessible sources from the field of general didactics, we will show
how the terminological and conceptual ideas of forms of student grouping
have changed in different historical periods. For the overview we have selected
and included works by Slovenian authors as well as works by authors from this
geographical area from the period of the former Yugoslavia. We have included
works from the field of general didactics (not specialized didactics), most of
which deal with more than one form of teaching. In our conclusions, we em-
phasize that since the beginning of the twenty-first century, the terminology,
classification and definition of forms of teaching have been standardized. The
number of (variants within) forms of student grouping forms has gradually de-
creased, while the concept itself has finally become a didactic category in its
own right, distinct from other didactic elements.
