                       tional and behavioural challenges. Screening tests play a vital role in early de-
                       tection and intervention and preventing secondary problems. In this paper,
                       we present a historical view of the concept of dyslexia and ways of identify-
                       ing dyslexia in Slovenia. In the empirical part, we analyse the results of the
                       dyslexia screening test, developed by Šali, which was the only standardized in-
                       strument for identifying dyslexia among Slovene elementary students for sev-
                       eral decades. The sample comprises schools in Primorska, where the screening
                       is implemented systematically. The analysed period spans from 2003 to 2022.
                       The results showed significant differences in the number of all spelling errors
                       in dictation both in different periods and between genders.
